It may be hard to believe, but February is nearly over. I love the longer daylight hours and the idea that something wonderful and new is about to spring up in the garden or my craft space. Don’t you just want to start something fun and new? I know that I do. Luckily for us all, we have a quilt art and a freeform artful quilt class in March. What is quilt art, you might ask?
An art quilt is an original exploration of a concept or idea rather than the handing down of a "pattern". It experiments with textile manipulation, color, texture, and/or a diversity of mixed media. An Art Quilt often pushes quilt world boundaries. [From What Is an Art Quilt? by The Art Quilt Association.]
This class will be held on Saturday, March 12th from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm. The class will focus on creating a stunning, pieced runner with curved cuts, movement, and color play. Materials for the class must be purchased from The Stitchin’ Den and they are amazing! The Warehouse District Collection will be used for the class and includes 1/2 yard of each of the 10 fabrics in our collection. This kit is only available to students signed up for Fabulous Freedom. When you register, you will receive a 15% discount on the class supplies. There will be a break for lunch, so pack some goodies.
Our instructor for the class is Dana E. Jones, a quiltmaker, author, editor, and photographer from Gilpin County, Colorado, who began quilting almost 20 years ago. She is a former editor of Quilters Newsletter and the SAQA Journal (Studio Art Quilt Associates Journal); has spoken and taught at quilt guilds, museums, and shops across the United States. She has written articles and designed patterns for quilt magazines, including Quilters Newsletter, McCall’s Quilting, Quick Quilts, The Quilt Live, Quilts with Style, and Quiltmaker. She has recorded how-to videos for TN Marketing, which is now Craftsy/National Quilters Circle. Dana is author of Pagtinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island. She is a member of Quirky Quilters in Nederland and the second vice president for programs for the Colorado Quilting Council. Her quilts have been exhibited at Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum and through the American Quilt Study Group. Dana was a 2012 artist in residence at the library in Gilpin County, where she presented a dozen programs and workshops on quilting for adults and children and teaches quilt-themed workshops for children at Grand Mesa Arts and Events Center in Cedaredge.
When they're looking at my work, they're looking at a painting and they're able to accept it better because it is also a quilt. - Faith Ringgold
Springtime in the Rockies is a class designed to help you create a delightful landscape with fabric. Our instructor, Carolyn Mangler, has been quilting for many years and perfecting her landscape quilting method for the last 10 years. She creates works of art by painting with fabric and she is going to share her techniques with you. Carolyn will provide insight into how she creates her fabric art so that you can capture the memories of your own special places.
