Class Description: Learn how to translate basic, beginner crochet stitches into a stunning and colorful primrose flower afghan. This is not your Granny’s Square crochet Afghan 😉. This easy pattern is quick to learn and builds as you go so that you aren’t stuck sewing together all those flowers at the end. This is a great stash buster, accommodates loose and tight crocheters, and is suitable for beginners through advanced students. Let color surprise and charm you as you create new combinations.
In this class we will learn the primrose flower, how to connect flowers together, and add a crochet edge. We will crochet a throw pillow (with matching pillow form) as our completed project. The techniques of this afghan can then be continued on your own (or in a Sticks and Strings bring your own project social gathering) to compete as large of an afghan as you desire. Guidance will be provided on potential sizes and required amounts of yarn. For this class we require a minimum of 5 balls of Hikoo Kenzie yarn.
Prerequisite skills: In order for you to feel comfortable in this class, students should have a basic understanding of crochet chain stitch, joining, single, and triple crochet stitches. These will be taught in class, but a basic understanding of how to hold the yarn and make stitches will be helpful.
Materials Needed: Minimum 5 balls of HiKoo Kenzie DK weight yarn (you are encouraged to purchase as many balls/colors as catch your fancy. More specific information about amounts required for a variety of afghan sizes will be provided in class), Size E (3.5mm) Crochet hook, Tapestry Needle, Scisssors,
Gunnhild Pattern ($9) on ArneCarlos.com (link from Ravelry). You may purchase this on your own through Arnecarlos.com ($9) OR purchase it in class in color print out ($11).
½ yard quilt fabric for pillow form case (purchased at The Stitchin’ Den).
Pillow stuffing form. (We will have several sizes available to purchase from.) Sewing machines and thread will be provided to make the pillow form case.
Class Outcomes: Students will become familiar with crochet terms, stitches and chart reading. Students will crochet a pillow sized crochet primrose square and will acquire skills to increase the square (or start a new project) to create an afghan throw of their desired size. They will learn to convert a crocheted square into the front of a throw pillow of their own construction. Students will learn about color liberty and bravely indulge in enchanting and surprising color combinations.
