This varsity inspired classic is simple to knit and a great introduction to the world of mittens.  The design, created by Michelle Hunter, features a easy full-fashioned thumb gusset and supporting videos.  Stripes are optional.

Knitting 101-Knit in the Round would be a great prerequisite for this class.

Prerequisite skills: In order for you to feel comfortable in this class, students should know how to cast on, knit, purl, bind off. Great class for beginning knitters who want to increase their skill level. Knitting 101-Knit in the Round would be a great prerequisite for this class.  

Materials Needed:

Pattern from Ravelry Classic Striped Mitten by Michelle Hunter $5

Worsted weight yarn base color and contrasting color-100g each

US #4 (3.5mm) double pointed needles or size needed to obtain gauge

US # 7 (4.5mm) double pointed needles or size needed to obtain gauge

Tapestry needle

Stitch markers

Stitch holder or scrap yarn

Scissors

Yarn Recommended:  Cascade 220 or Brown Sheep Lamb Spun

Class Outcomes:  Student will increase their confidence and knitting knowledge while completing a set of mittens.  Students will learn the following skills:  using double pointed needles knitting in the round, joining a new color, M1L, M1R, SSK, Backwards Loop Cast On.

Pre-Class Homework:  Do a gauge swatch with size 7 needles

Cast on 24 stitches

Knit 2 rows

Row 1:  Knit

Row 2: K2, Purl 20, K2

Repeat Rows 1-2 10 times

Knit 2 rows

Bind off loosely

Wash and lay flat to dry. Swatch should measure 4" inside the boarder.  If it does not then adjust your needle size and knit another gauge swatch.
